Exploring local food is one of the joys of travelling. Åland is full of clean flavours and high-quality ingredients, thanks to the archipelago’s fertile soil, long sunny days, bright summer nights and fresh sea air. They create perfect conditions for small-scale farming and artisanal food production. Here are 10 iconic Åland foods you should taste during your visit—enjoy them in restaurants, buy them from local shops, or try cooking them yourself.
1. Åland Pancake
It’s no surprise that Åland pancake was, for a few years ago, voted “Åland’s dish of the century”. Unlike the traditional pancake, this one is made from semolina or rice porridge and flavoured with cardamom. It’s served as a hearty snack or dessert, traditionally with whipped cream and a gently spiced prune compote.
Back in the days, the recipe began as a clever way to use leftover porridge. Today, you’ll find Åland pancake in many cafés across the islands.
2. Åland Black Bread
This compact, sweet rye loaf is a beloved part of daily life and celebrations. Traditional black bread takes time and patience to bake, but it keeps well—once important food for seal hunters, fishermen and sailors. Today there are many variations, baked both at home and in local bakeries. It’s perfect with fish soup or served at midsummer and Christmas with a thick layer of hand-churned Åland butter, and local fish such as cold-smoked salmon or cured whitefish. Toasted in butter, it also becomes a delicious starter.
3. Freshly Pressed Apple Juice
Did you know that more than 70% of all Finnish apples are grown in Åland? The islands are dotted with orchards, producing many apple varieties and exquisite juices. Try single-variety juices made from Amorosa, Discovery, Zonga, Zari or Santana—each one has its own aroma and character. Tasting them side by side is almost like a wine tasting!
4. Åland Butter
Butter may be simple—just cream, salt and culture—but Åland’s churned butter brings any dish to life. It belongs on black bread and alongside boiled fresh potatoes, and perch fried in Åland butter is a true summer classic. The butter is still churned in the traditional way, giving it a full flavour and a texture that splatters less when frying—something chefs love.
You can buy Åland butter across the islands: look for the dark-blue ÅCA package.
5. Fish From Local Waters
For centuries, fish was the daily food and livelihood of the archipelago. Herring, pike and later cod were vital catches. Pike was once – and still is – a festive dish, especially at Christmas, and live fish were even transported as far as Helsinki. Fish is still essential to Åland cuisine. In summer, try perch fried in butter, and smoked perch, flounder or whitefish. At Christmas, look for marinated herring, raw spiced salmon and smoked fish specialities.

6. Pure Åland Honey
Did you know the Åland islands are one of the world’s last regions free from the Varroa mite—a huge advantage for healthy bees and high-quality honey? Beekeeping has a long history in Åland, where flower-rich meadows and clean sea air give each honey a unique flavour, depending on where it is collected. Taste linden honey from Mariehamn, dandelion honey from Eckerö or aromatic heather honey from the outer archipelago.
7. Craft Drinks
Åland may be small, but its craft drink scene is impressively diverse. You’ll find soft drinks made from real berries and fruit, freshly pressed apple juices, and artisanal alcoholic drinks ranging from cider and beer to gin. Many are handmade in small batches and available at cafés, restaurants and shops. A favourite is Stallhagen’s golden Honey Beer with a hint of sweetness from real honey. For a non-alcoholic option, try Styrman pilsner—fresh, citrusy and pleasantly bitter.
8. Lamb From the Islands
Åland’s sheep graze freely on natural pastures, and lambs are raised on small farms. This grazing is part of a sustainable cycle that benefits both nature and flavour. Åland lamb has won awards for its high quality, reflecting excellent animal care and skilled farming. The meat is dark, tender and full of character—a true delicacy.
9. Potatoes
Potatoes are a natural part of Åland’s farming and everyday cooking. Thanks to the mild sea climate and clean soil, the potatoes grown here are firm, flavourful and long-lasting—loved by both home cooks and top restaurants. Potatoes have long been a staple food in the archipelago, but they also inspire creativity: think crispy potato waffles, iconic Taffel crisps or golden French fries – all produced on the islands.
10. Sea Buckthorn
Sea buckthorn grows wild along Åland’s salty shores. Its bright orange berries are packed with vitamin C and harvested in autumn. Special juice presses remove only the juice, leaving the berries and seeds on the bush to feed wildlife without harming the plant. Because sea buckthorn is dioecious, both male and female bushes are needed for berries to form. You can buy sea-buckthorn juice and marmalade at autumn markets—or taste the flavour in local yoghurt or creamy sea-buckthorn panna cotta.
