Welcome to accessible Åland

Visit Åland collaborates with the local tourism industry and Åland’s disability organisation Handikappförbund for a more accessible Åland.

Disabled parking in Mariehamn

Parking is free of charge in Mariehamn but it is often limited to 2 hours. A parking disc is always required. If you don’t have one, you can purchase it at e.g. grocery stores and petrol stations in town.

In the town centre there are 27 disabled parking spaces and 6 disabled parking spaces can be found in underground public parking garages. Take a look at the map of disabled parking spaces.

Bathing Wheelchair and Adapted Facilities

Lilla Holmen's beach in Mariehamn offers a free beach wheelchair, a ramp into the water, and an accessible changing room.

The wheelchair, a Hippocampe model, is stored in a locked shed next to the changing room and is available to borrow free of charge during the day. Instructions for borrowing are posted on the door. The beach wheelchair has floating wheels, and an attendant is required.

The changing room allows for a transfer from a regular wheelchair to the beach wheelchair, and the path to the ramp is a wooden deck for easier access. The ramp leading into the water has handrails on both sides.

Public toilets in Mariehamn

There are two accessible public toilets – one coin-operated next to restaurant Miramar by Bussplan bus station and one free of charge at Visit Åland’s tourist information office, Torggatan 6.

There is a coin-operated, however non-accessible, public toilet by the town square.
