Hiking in Åland
Discover Åland on foot and experience a landscape that changes with every step – from tranquil forests to lush meadows and panoramic sea views. Whether you're planning a long-distance hike or a gentle day walk, there’s a trail that matches your interests, fitness level and sense of adventure.
A Trail for Every Explorer
There are three longer hiking routes on Åland which range from 10 to 80 kilometres, offering something for both beginners and experienced hikers. Most trails are relatively easy to navigate, although some parts may be uneven or slippery, especially across bare bedrock.
If you prefer shorter outings, Åland offers a network of 40 nature trails between 1 and 13 kilometres in length. These trails range from easy to moderately challenging, often winding through nature reserves where you can observe local wildlife and unique vegetation. No special gear is needed, but waterproof footwear or sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially in wetter areas.
Åland’s nature is open 24/7, all year round!

St Olav Waterway, a Nordic Pilgrimage Trail
One of Åland’s most iconic routes is the St Olav Waterway, the world’s first official pilgrimage trail through an archipelago. Starting at Turku Cathedral in mainland Finland, the path crosses the Åland Islands before continuing into Sweden. From there, you can choose between several connecting trails – including the Viking Trail, Helgonleden and Stråsjöleden – to reach St Olavsleden and the final destination in Trondheim, Norway, on the Atlantic coast.
