10 Accommodations with Unique Charm

Stay in a cosy countryside hotel, sleep well in a charming B&B, or enjoy tranquillity on an island in an authentic archipelago style. On Åland, you can opt for a unique accommodation. Here, we present 10 charming accommodations that stand out – but obviously, there are even several options!

1. Jomala Gård – a charming B&B in a rural landscape

Set in a beautiful rural landscape just 10 km from Mariehamn, Jomala Gård is a charming B&B with the perfect location for exploring Åland by bike. Nestled in the heart of the main island, it’s an ideal base for discovering the archipelago’s most famous sites and hidden gems. Right next door, you’ll find a farm open for visitors—making this a favourite stay also for families. The guesthouse, once a boarding school for agricultural studies, has roots dating back to the 17th century. Here, you’ll stay in a cosy double room with a private toilet, while the shower, kitchen, and laundry facilities are shared. Step outside, and the peaceful countryside welcomes you at your doorstep. And best of all? Your four-legged friends are welcome too!

2. Strandnäs Gård – Spacious Villa Near the City

This villa is the perfect choice for groups of up to 10 people, whether you're travelling with family or friends. This newly renovated villa, Strandnäs Gård, offers high comfort and plenty of space, just a 15-minute walk from the center of Mariehamn, where you'll find restaurants, shops, and local attractions. The villa features five bedrooms, a spacious living room, a fully equipped kitchen, six bathrooms, and access to a sauna. Surrounded by a lovely garden, it also offers free private parking.

3. Degersand Resort & Camping

This campsite boasts an unbeatable location by the sea, set in breathtaking nature alongside Åland’s finest sandy beach. Here, you’ll find the perfect balance between privacy and community, tranquillity and activity. The resort offers tastefully decorated and well-equipped cottages, simple overnight cabins, and spaces for tents. If you're travelling by motorhome or caravan, you’ll find scenic spots with sea views. The on-site restaurant Q serves delicious food and drinks, while the beach bar and terrace offer refreshing soft drinks in a laid-back atmosphere. Right by the water, a wood-fired sauna with a spacious deck invites you to relax and take in the magnificent sea views. Whether in summer or winter, this is a place to unwind and connect with nature.

4. Brändö Bike & Bed

In Brändö, at the easternmost archipelago of Åland, lies the charming small Borkenholm estate and Brändö Bed & Bike, a small B&B surrounded by a lush courtyard. The cosy rooms are perfect for cyclists, as Brändö is an interesting cycling destination with its many small islands that are enjoyable to explore on the way from the Finnish mainland to the main island of Åland. If you didn't bring your own bike, you can rent one here for touring the islands. The highly praised breakfast includes berries, fruits, and vegetables from the garden and ensures a hearty start to your next bike ride.

5. Bergklint Hermit Cottage

This cottage may not be large in size, but it provides everything you need. Bergklint is located on a small island off the coast of Eckerö, and even though the boat journey takes only a few minutes, everyday life feels left far behind. Here, you can focus on the essentials and experience life surrounded by the sea. The cottage, furnished with high-quality materials and products, offers space for two. Here, you can detach from daily life, listen to the seagulls, and admire the sunset over the sea. The wood-burning fireplace in the cottage provides warmth and a romantic atmosphere in the evenings. Here, you can take a walk along the rocky shores, have a bath in the wood-fired sauna, cook outdoors, and enjoy leisure time and privacy on the island.

6. Strandhugget B&B

The small island of Sottunga has just around 100 residents, but in summer, it welcomes Ålanders and boat guests seeking peace in this charming archipelago community.

Nestled by the guest harbour, the cosy Strandhugget guesthouse offers three double rooms and three small overnight cabins. Showers and toilets are available in a separate service building. A homemade breakfast is served in the dining room of the main house, while the summer restaurant Salteriet—famous for its schnitzels—offers lunch and dinner right by the water only a short walk away. You’ll reach the island by archipelago ferry or your own boat. It’s a perfect getaway for couples!

7. Silverskär Islands

Silverskär, located in northern Åland, includes four islands: Silverskär, Sviskär, Klobben, and the tiny Champagne Island. This site offers accommodation primarily for groups and therefore it suits perfectly, for example, for hosting weddings. You’ll stay in cottages resembling traditional fishing lodges, or in a hermit's cabin on your own island. The newest accommodation resembles a long-shaped backyard shed and is skillfully built with respect to old traditions. Thanks to this, the building looks like it’s been standing there for ages. However, the appearance is just a facade, as inside awaits a set of cosy hotel rooms, each with a unique look and a modern bathroom. While the wedding guests can stay here, the bridal couple spends their wedding night on their own Champagne island!

8. Björnhofvda Gård

Björnhofvda Gård is a charming and cosy B&B in Eckerö in western Åland, about a half an hour from Mariehamn. Here, the rural charm is combined with tasteful British influences, as the hostess Jackie is from Great Britain. The pleasant indoor spaces resemble pages from a home decor magazine, and the serene surroundings ensure a relaxing and harmonious experience for those staying at Björnhofvda Gård. The restaurant serves tasty dishes made primarily from local ingredients, and the occasional afternoon tea events have become immensely popular, with seats usually booked quickly. This place is especially suitable for couples and adult travellers.

9. Havsvidden Hotel and Bungalows

Havsvidden Resort is located on the northern coast of the main island of Åland. Here, you’ll get stunned by the bare granite rocks and the north-facing seascape, which is equally beautiful regardless of the season. On a sunny summer day, the sea sparkles bright blue, while on a stormy autumn day, it crashes against the red cliffs. Havsvidden features a hotel with a reception, bar, restaurant, lobby, and conference facilities. On the beach, a separate building for sauna and bathing welcomes you to relax. You can stay in an apartment or a separate beach villa, several of them stand scattered along the rocky shores. Havsvidden also has a guest harbour for about 20 boats.

10. Hotel Brudhäll

If you want to experience the Åland outer archipelago, you should visit the island of Kökar. It’s an island with its own unique character. Hotel Brudhäll is open year-round so you can experience the archipelago in all seasons. The hotel is located in the guest harbour in the heart of Karlby village. The hotel offers simply furnished but cosy rooms, many of which provide a sea view towards the fairway that leads to the guest harbour. The restaurant serves a delicious breakfast buffet, and it is open to hotel guests 7 days a week. The beach sauna by the quay and the outdoor jacuzzi provide relaxation after a day out in Kökar's scenic nature.
