Family activities

For families that enjoy being active it’s suitable to rent bicycles, a car, a kayak or a boat and go for your own adventure on or among the islands. Bring your stuffed picnic basket along! The main island is just 45 kilometres from north to south and 50 kilometres from west to east, which makes it easy to explore.

Wherever you go on Åland, the shore is always near. There are both long sandy beaches for families with smaller children and beaches with jumping towers where the older children will enjoy themselves. At the beaches in Mariehamn there are beach volley courts and in town is the swimming centre Mariebad, with its great adventure pool.

Who is fastest behind the wheel? After a family race around the 605 meter long go-cart course in Vessingsboda, you’ll know the answer. More examples of fun summer activities are minigolf, boule, farm visits or an exciting safari expedition in the wildlife enclosure in Eckerö.

Enjoy an outing

Åland is made for small outings – book a guided boat trip to the Åland archipelago or plan your own family outing.

During a day trip to Eckerö you can for example take a round trip with the wildlife safari tram and visit the Åland Hunting and Fishing Museum by the old fishing shacks in Käringsund. In Eckerö is also the Eckerö Mail & Custom’s House located. If you want to swim or lay on the beach, there are both Sandviken’s beach and Degersand’s beach.

If you would rather go eastward you can spend a day in the archipelago municipality Vårdö. On the road to Vårdö, you’ll also drive by the castle in Kastelholm and the fortress ruins in Bomarsund with the Bomarsund’s museum and the exhibition in Telegrafen.

If you want to visit the outer archipelago, we can also recommend Föglö in the southern parts of Åland. Leave the car in Svinö, take the ferry and walk around in the picturesque village Degerby. Further out in the archipelago is Kökar with its beautiful untouched nature and the island Källskär. Contact Ålandstrafiken for further information about the archipelago ferries´ timetables.

Also the shipping town of Mariehamn with the Åland Maritime Museum and the sailing ship Pommern is well worth a visit.

Lilla Holmen beach, located just a short distance on foot from the centre of Mariehamn, is popular among families. The sandy beach is child-friendly and has a bridge, diving raft, beach volley court and a pirate ship for smaller children.
