Discover Local Arts and Crafts in Åland

If you enjoy browsing shops and discovering locally made products, Åland has plenty to offer. Mariehamn is the best place to start, with craft shops open throughout the year, while the rest of the islands are dotted with small studios and farm shops. The selection is at its widest during the summer and autumn.

In the centre of Mariehamn, around Torggatan, you'll find a collection of independent boutiques where it's easy to spend an afternoon exploring. Wander along the cobbled pedestrian street and discover locally designed fashion and homeware, books, jewellery and handmade crafts.

Crafted from Nature

Åland's crafts are deeply rooted in the islands' traditions while embracing contemporary design. Many artisans work with natural materials such as wood, wool, textiles, leather, metal, glass and clay, creating beautiful objects inspired by the surrounding landscape.

One place well worth a visit is SALT, located in the Maritime Quarter. The shop showcases products from more than 100 local makers, and many of the artisans behind them also have their workshops in the same building, giving visitors a chance to experience both the craftsmanship and the people who create it.

Meet the Makers

During the summer months, many artists and craftspeople open the doors to their studios and farm shops across the Åland countryside.

If you're visiting Åland in autumn, don't miss two of the islands' most popular annual events: the Åland Harvest Festival, where local producers and artisans welcome visitors to their farms and Konstrundan, when artists across Åland invite visitors into their creative spaces.
